WavTool was started as a side-project by Sam Watkinson, based in Vancouver, to see what was possible with audio processing within the environment of the browser. It started as a collection of small audio experiments, but slowly came together and grew into a platform to centralize these experimental features.

After working on the foundations of WavTool for more than a year, he was joined by his ex-colleague Keith Chia, based in Singapore, to help expand the tool. The adaptable nature of the web platform that WavTool was built on meant that advanced AI features were able to be developed in days after the emergence of ChatGPT into the mainstream consciousness, and together, they released WavTool to the public in March 2023 to much hype and excitement.

Since then, the team at WavTool has grown its arsenal of cutting-edge audio features, such as developing its own proprietary Composer modal for generating melodies and accompaniments using MIDI, as well as audio generation, stem-splitting and other capabilities that leverage AI to analyze, generate, and manipulate audio.

Today, WavTool is a fully remote company of five people, with contributions from people in Canada, Singapore, Japan, the US, and the UK.
